The Friday Fatbuster
I’ve been doing this ride for yonks now, and while its morphed a bit it is still my favourite ride of the week. We roll out from the car park at the back of Turramurra, we go up the highway to Hornsby, along to Galston Rd at Asquith. We follow the road to Somerville Road where we ride at pace in two-abreast formation along the road before returning along Somerville Road where we ride in single file formation. Left at Galston Road, left at the Old Pacific Highway along to Asquith Station.
Watching carefully for traffic, we proceed to Bobbin Head. We descend to the water where we turn around and then climb the steep side of Bobbo, Again we descend and continue up the other side (aka Bobbo East, aka Turramurra side, aka shallow side) to Bobbin Head Road. Finally we roll into the Corner Cafe for an early coffee. If you’re looking to ease into the weekend, active recovery before the weekend, or can’t ride on Saturday and want an early social hit-out, the Fatbuster is for you.
MAP TO COME!
Distance: 45km (One Fully Inclusive Group)
Riders briefing at 6:10am for all group, then ride starts at 6:15am sharp at the Turramurra Cyclery car park.
There is one group of “tempo”pace, approx. 28-31kmph depending on the strength of the bunch.
Choose your group wisely...
There is waiting at the top of both climbs, however there is a certain pace to be upheld, and a fair distance to cover. If you can climb the shallow side of Bobbin Head in less than 12-13 mins and can ride at an average of >27kmph when by yourself for this distance then we recommend that you come and have a try! If you need help developing bunch skills, don’t be afraid to sign up to our one-on-one skills sessions which you can find here: https://store-fda2e.mybigcommerce.com/skills-training/
What to Bring
Bring a spare tube, tyre levers and a CO2 cannister. Also you can bring some food and water, just in case you run out of steam, and that's not pleasant!
If you are driving, please park in the IGA car park, towards the loading dock.
If it's raining make your own call. Most riders don't come but it's not officially cancelled. You do ride at your own risk if weather conditions are adverse. Have a coffee in Bar Stelvio instead!
If you are not a member of Peloton Sports Inc. (or another Cycling Australia affiliated club) and would like to participate in this ride then you will need to join our club. Joining the club can be done at Turramurra Cyclery or online via the Cycling Australia website, please use the following link http://www.cycling.org.au/. The cost will vary depending on your age and your racing ambitions.
Please note: cycling is a dangerous sport and can result in serious injury or even death, if you don’t currently have a Cycling Australia license you are uninsured and you are riding at your OWN RISK. You will be responsible for your own losses and any damage that you might cause.
And some encouragement…
Here at Peloton Sports we endeavor to be an inclusive group and to keep the pace sustainable for most peloton members. However bunch riding is inherently quick, hence the appeal. If you find yourself unable to keep up, or getting “dropped”, please don’t be disheartened! It has happened to us all!
Keep coming back, keep trying to hold on to a wheel with the goal to improve your fitness and be part of the crew. This is indicative of the pace/standard that has been in the bunch for years. If you are getting popped off the back, look at this as a goal to aspire to. Every week you will probably find yourself inching forward and getting better.
