Hunter Classic Write Up
Irish luck couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to ride to Harrigan’s Irish Pub at Pokolbin.
With 30 odd registered for the ride, and a handful of others joining for a Calga special, the ever efficient crew of Peleton Sports had the bus packed, riders briefed and everyone ready to go. Rolling out as one bunch Mark set a steady pace up the Highway with the Brittmeister calling the shots from the lantern rouge.
Despite a couple of early punctures, the bunch stayed together until Peats Ridge where the ride maestros called the split. A couple of nameless over enthusiastic fellas rolled with the A bunch, but soon found themselves out the back and swallowed up by the Britt express following behind.
The Senn and Senn support truck was kept busy all day; an irreparable puncture, a SRAM failure, a fall and a biomechanical failure or two kept V and Rolf on their toes for most of the day. They kept everyone moving, as well as enjoying a ride/drive tag team to make the most of the perfect riding conditions.
Up the front it was dog eat dog as the A’s neared Pokolbin. An admission of hunger flatting from Rowdy had the boys as quiet as mice when asked for a gel; Jake seizing the opportunity to turn up the heat and put everyone into the hurt box. Little did he know that Luca had organised a strategically placed red light in the middle of nowhere that magically turned green just as he hauled his ass back onto the bunch. With the smell of ale in the air, the green light set Jake off again, forcing the bantam weight division to pump out max watts to keep him from being first at lunch.
The rest of the crew rolled in not far behind, smiles aplenty albeit a little weary from the first long ride after the winter hibernation. Driving from the back of the bus it was great to see so many strong rides – Deb Deb and Cathie kept the boys up front seeing pink, Sooman drove the back bunch home after borrowing Tall Tim’s wheel and Larri made a welcome return to the Peloton Sports classics with some strong turns on the front.
With Bumble Hill and Ettalong in the coming weeks Sunday was just a teaser for the upcoming spring riding season. Check out the calendar and get your leave passes in early.
Of course days like Sunday wouldn’t be possible without the brilliant support from those behind the scenes. Thank you to Veronika, Rolf and Peter Thomas for your fantastic work; and to Penny for the behind scenes efforts getting the racing Dad’s back in time to support the clubs (very) junior racers. We’ll need the young ones in years to come to help us on and off our bikes!!
The 'Dad' that went straight from finishing the Hunter Classic to the kids race...

Rexine's Update on the Jones Family!
Last weekend was Junior Road Titles for NSW in Wagga (Wantabadgery). It was a beautiful weekend and there was loads of J and a few L which means overall there was perspective and satisfaction.
Alex first – he is in his last year as a U13B and there was 34 competitors for Alex (a strong group of kids). Up first was the 6km Time Trial, Alex felt he rode ok until he saw the results and was saddened with his 13th but after some perspective got back on the social band wagon. He was inspired to do better in his road race (15km open road course). Alex and 3 others got a break on the pack and he learnt his first test of only 3 of the 4 wanting to take a turn on the front to stay away from the group. The break got caught with 800m to go, so a bunch sprint finish it was with Alex coming in 2nd (a silver medal) and as you could imagine a few more of these J J J. Saturday night Alex announced to Daryl and I he was going to take gold in the criterium tomorrow, the 15min race plus 3 laps got underway and they were on fire (especially seeing their rollout is 5.5M). Alex was very active in the crit and spent his time at the front end of the bike race taking turns and keeping the pace on. In the final sprint Alex knew he had to do something different to beat a very strong Illawarra Junior and came in for the finish (photo attached) with a great bike throw and the gold medal and a few more words and of course a few more J J J J. You will all be happy to know Alex now moves up to U15M and his rollout becomes 6M.
Ashlee had a mixed weekend (partly I think from my cooking on Friday night as Alex clearly told me on Saturday morning and Friday ngiht). The field was strong with some 32 riders and first was the 14km Time Trial Ashlee wasn’t feeling the best on the morning but rode as strong as she could to come through with a 3rd position & a bronze medal (8 seconds behind 2nd and a further 12 behind 1st place). The 60km Road Race came next and with a strong head wind for most of the course it was always going to be tough. There was 1 break away with Ashlee coming in for 2nd place and a silver medal. Sunday held the criterium which was a 30min race plus 3 laps. Ashlee was positioned well for the final sprint home only to have the person next to her come crashing down (forcing Ashlee to pull out of the sprint but stay upright J ) and come in for a 4th place.
Ashlee has been chosen for the State Team to race in Bendigo in 3 weeks time. Whilst the racing didn’t quite go the way Ashlee wanted we are so proud of her performance on & off the bike over the weekend to push through and perform the best that she could on the day.
As always thank you to the club for the rides, laughter, stories, coffee and hot chocolate that goes a long way to support the kids in their dreams.
